PARAGRAPH , a See also:term for a See also:section or See also:division of written or printed See also:matter, which, as beginning a new subject, marking a break in the subject, &c., is signified by beginning the section on a new See also:line set back or indented; also by the See also:symbol, now 1, a reversed P, formerly Q or I, to See also:mark such a division. The Gr. aapaypat/xbs (7rapa and ypa4ew, to write alongside or beside) was used of the See also:short See also:horizontal line or stroke which marked a line in a MS. where such a division occurs; and lrapaypacb i of a marginal See also:note, also the division so marked. The word " paragraph," besides these technical typographical meanings, is also applied to the See also:separate numbered sections in an See also:affidavit or other legal document, or in a See also:statute, &c., and in journalism to a short See also:item of See also:news or brief See also:notice of events.
