PARNAHYBA, or PARNAHIBA , a See also:port of the See also:state of See also:Piauhy, See also:Brazil, on the right See also:bank of the Parnahyba See also:river, 250 M. below the c pital, See also:Therezina. Pop. of the See also:municipality (18go), 4415. Parnahyba is situated at the point where the most easterly of the See also:delta outlets, or channels, called the Rio Iguarassfi, branches off from the See also:main stream. All the outlet channels of the river are obstructed by bars built up by the strong current along the See also:Atlantic See also:coast, and only vessels of See also:light See also:draught can enter. The See also:town has some well-constructed buildings of the old Portuguese type, including two churches and a See also:fine See also:hospital. Parnahyba is the commercial entrep8t of the state. It exports hides, See also:goat-skins, See also:cotton and See also:tobacco, chiefly through the small port of Amarracao, at the mouth of the Rio Iguarassiu, 11 m. distant.
