PEIPUS, or CHUDSKOYE OZERO , a See also:lake of See also:north-See also:west See also:Russia, between the governments of St See also:Petersburg, See also:Pskov, See also:Livonia and See also:Esthonia. Including its See also:southern See also:extension, sometimes known as Lake Pskov, it has an See also:area of 1356 sq. m. Its shores are See also:flat and sandy, and in See also:part wooded; its See also:waters deep, and they afford valuable fishing. The lake is fed by the Velikaya, which enters it at its southern extremity, and by the Embach, which flows in See also:half way up its western See also:shore; it drains into the Gulf of See also:Finland by the Narova, which issues at its north-See also:east corner.
