PENZA , a See also:town of See also:Russia, See also:capital of the See also:government of the same name, 492 M. by See also:rail S.E. from See also:Moscow. It stands on a See also:plateau 567 ft. above the See also:sea, at the confluence of the Penza with the navigable Sura. Pop. (1897), 61,851. The older parts of the town are constructed of See also:wood, but the newer parts are well built. The See also:cathedral was erected in 182o-1821. Penza has technical See also:schools, public See also:libraries, a museum of antiquities, and a See also:theatre which has played some See also:part in the See also:history of the See also:Russian See also:stage. The bulk of the inhabitants support themselves by See also:agriculture or fishing in the Sura. An imperial botanical See also:garden is situated within two See also:miles of the town.
