PESCARA , a See also:

river of See also:Italy, formed by the confluence of the Gizio and''Aterno, and flowing into the Adriatic at the small See also:town of Pescara. This town occupies the site of the See also:ancient Aternum, the See also:terminus of the Via Claudia See also:Valeria, and up to 1867 a fortress of some importance. The railway from See also:Sulmona follows the Pescara valley and joins the See also:coast See also:line to See also:Brindisi at Pescara. In this valley, 22 M. from the See also:sea, was the site of the ancient Interpromium, a town belonging probably to the See also:Paeligni; and not far off is the very See also:fine Cistercian See also:abbey See also:church of S. Clemente di Casauria, founded by the See also:emperor See also:Louis II. in 871. The See also:present See also:building belongs to the 12th See also:century. The sculptures of the portals, the See also:pulpit, the See also:Paschal See also:candelabrum, &c., and the See also:bronze doors of this See also:period are important. The See also:chronicle of the abbey, of the end of the 12th century, is in the Bibliotheque nationale at See also:Paris. See V.
