PHYLE , a See also:

mountain fortress, on a pass leading from See also:Athens to See also:Boeotia and See also:Thebes, and commanding a See also:fine view of the See also:Attic See also:plain. It is situated on the See also:south-See also:west end of Mt Parnes. It is chiefly famous for its occupation by See also:Thrasybulus at the See also:head of the Athenian exiles during the See also:rule of the See also:Thirty Tyrants in 404 B.C. After defending himself from attack, with the help of a snowstorm, he succeeded by a venturesome See also:night See also:march in seizing Munychia. See also:Close to Phyle is the cliff called Harma, over which the Pythian lightnings were watched for from Athens.
