PHYLARCHUS , a See also:

Greek historian, who flourished during the See also:time of See also:Aratus, the See also:strategus of the Achaean See also:League, in the 3rd See also:century B.C. His birthplace is variously given as See also:Athens, See also:Naucratis, or See also:Sicyon. He was probably a native of Naucratis, and subsequently migrated to Athens. He was the author of a See also:history in 28 books, covering the See also:period from the expedition of See also:Pyrrhus See also:king of See also:Epirus to See also:Peloponnesus (272) to the See also:death of the Spartan king Cleomenes (220) after his defeat by Antigonus Doson. See also:Polybius (ii. 56-63) charges him with undue partiality for Cleomenes and unfairness towards Aratus; See also:Plutarch (Aratus, 38 ), who is of the same See also:opinion, did not hesitate to use him freely in his own See also:biographies of See also:Agis and Cleomenes.
