He subsequently became a naturalized See also:British subject. Educated in Germany, he resolved in 1826 to devote himself to missionary See also:work, and in 1828 went to See also:London to prepare for an See also:appointment offered him by the Society for promoting See also:Christianity among the See also:Jews. In 183o however he gave up the See also:idea of missionary work, and became See also:minister of a small See also:congregation at See also:Teignmouth, See also:Devonshire. He contended that the temporal as well as the spiritual needs of See also:life could be supplied by See also:prayer, and on this principle abolished See also:- PEW (Mid. Eng. puwe, through O. Fr. puya, pui, mod, puy, in the sense of hill, cf. appuyer, to lean against; from Lat. podium, a high place, balcony; Gr. lrb&ov, pedestal, 'roes, foot)

He died at Bristol on the loth of See also:March 1898.
