E. of See also:Bizerta, on the Ghar-el-See also:Mela, a See also:lagoon, also known as the See also:Lake of Porto Farina, at the mouth of the Mejerda (the See also:ancient Bagradas). Porto Farina was the See also:naval See also:arsenal of the piratical beys of See also:Tunis and was bombarded by the See also:English under See also:Admiral See also:Blake in 1655. The lagoon has become very shallow in consequence of the silt brought down by the Mejerda. The town has ceased to be important, and its inhabitants have dwindled to about 1500. The ruins to m. to the See also:south-See also:west, near the See also:village of Bu Shater, are identified with the ancient See also:Utica (q.v.).
