RAGATZ , a famous watering-See also:place in the Swiss See also:canton of St See also:Gall, situated on the See also:left See also:bank of the See also:Rhine, and by See also:rail 132 M. N. of See also:Coire or 611 m. S.E. of See also:Zurich. It stands at a height of 1696 ft., at the entrance to the magnificent See also:gorge of the Tamina, about 3 M. Up which by See also:carriage road are the extraordinarily placed See also:Baths of Pfafers (2247 ft.). Since 184o the hot See also:mineral See also:waters of Pfafers are conducted in pipes to Ragatz, which is in a more pleasant position. Consequently Ragatz has much increased in importance since that date. In 1900 its native See also:population was 1866, mainly See also:German-speaking, while there were 1472 Romanists to 392 Protestants. The See also:annual number of visitors is reckoned at 30,000.
