RAJAHMUNDRY, or RAJAMAHENDRI , a See also:town of See also:British See also:India, in the See also:Godavari See also:district of See also:Madras. Pop. (1901) 36,408. It stands on the See also:left See also:bank of the See also:river Godavari, at the See also:head of the See also:delta, 36o m. N. of Madras, and has a station on the See also:East See also:Coast railway, which is here carried across the river by a See also:bridge of 56 spans. The See also:government See also:college is one of the four provincial See also:schools established in 1853. There are also a training college and high school. Carpets, rugs and wooden wares are manufactured. Tradition divides the merit of See also:founding Rajahmundry between the See also:Orissa and See also:Chalukya princes. In 1470 it was wrested from Orissa by the Mahommedans, but See also:early in the 16th See also:century it was retaken by See also:Krishna See also:Raja. It continued under See also:Hindu See also:rule till 1572, when it yielded to the Moslems of the See also:Deccan under Rafat See also:Khan. It passed into the See also:possession of the See also:French in 1753, but they were driven out by the British under See also:Colonel See also:Forde in 1758.
