ROARING FORTIES , the name given to the See also:zone in the See also:southern hemisphere, near the 4oth parallel of See also:latitude, in which the See also:north-See also:westerly " See also:anti-See also:trade " winds attain their greatest development. Since the See also:belt lies in the See also:Great Southern Ocean (q.v.), and is little interrupted by See also:land, the " planetary circulation " undergoes little modification and barometric gradients are steep. The " brave See also:west winds " are accordingly of great strength, and, as in the corresponding belt of the See also:northern hemisphere, the See also:movement is largely broken up into the See also:low and high pressure vortices known as cyclones and anticyclones.
