RUNG , a See also:short See also:round See also:bar or stick used as a See also:cross-bar or See also:rail in a See also:chair, and particularly as one of the steps or rounds of a See also:ladder. In Scottish the word retains the See also:original meaning of a See also:staff or stick, especially a short thick cudgel. The O.E. hrung is used only of a bar or rail in a See also:wagon; the word also occurs in O.Du. See also:rouge, See also:beam of a plough, Ger. Runge, See also:pin, See also:bolt.
