RUNNIMEDE, or RUNNYMEDE , a meadow on the S. See also:bank of the See also:river See also:Thames, See also:England, in the See also:county of See also:Surrey and the See also:parish of See also:Egham. It is celebrated in connexion with the See also:signature of Magna Carta (q.v.) by See also:King See also:John on the 15th of See also:June 1215. It has been disputed whether the ceremony took See also:place actually in the meadow or on Magna Carta or See also:Charter See also:Island lying off it. The charter itself indicates Runnimede by name, but this may have included the island, which is the traditional site and was in 1217 the See also:meeting-place of See also:Henry III. and See also:Louis (afterwards Louis VIII.) of See also:France.
