SARPSBORG , a seaport and manufacturing See also:town of See also:Norway, in Smaalenene amt (See also:county), 68 m. S.S.E. of See also:Christiania on the See also:Gothenburg railway. Pop. (1900) 6888. It is the junction for an alternative See also:line to Christiania following the Glommen valley. It sprang into importance through the utilization of the falls in the See also:river Glommen for See also:driving saw-See also:mills and generating electric See also:power. The Sarpsfos, See also:south-See also:east of the town, is a majestic fall, descending 74 ft. with a width of 120 ft. There are See also:wood-pulp factories (one worked by an See also:English See also:company employing over moo hands), factories for See also:calcium See also:carbide (used for manufacturing See also:acetylene See also:gas), See also:paper and See also:aluminium; and See also:spinning and See also:weaving mills. There are two large electric See also:supply stations, and power and See also:light are furnished from this point to Frederikstad, 9 m. S.W. The See also:port is at Sannesund, 1 m. S.; its quays can be reached by vessels See also:drawing 20 ft. The town was originally founded in the 1 rth See also:century, and destroyed by the Swedes in 1567.
