SHIRT , an undergarment of See also:linen, See also:silk, See also:cotton and See also:flannel for the upper See also:part of the See also:body, usually only applied to such a garment when worn by men, though the See also:term is becoming See also:common as used of a See also:plain See also:form of See also:blouse worn by See also:women, the See also:American " shirt-See also:waist." The word is apparently Scandinavian in origin and is an See also:adaptation of the Icel. skyrte, See also:Dan. skiorte, properly a See also:short garment, and is derived from the See also:root skar—to cut off; it is cognate with Ger. See also:Schurz, See also:apron, and the same root is seen in " short," " shear " and " skirt "; the last word is now used of that part of a woman's garment which reaches from the waist to the feet, but properly means the See also:lower part of the shirt, hence, edge, border of anything.
