SILVES , a See also:

city of S. See also:Portugal, in the See also:district of See also:Faro (formerly the See also:province of See also:Algarve); on the right See also:bank of the See also:river Silves at the See also:head of its See also:estuary, and 30 M. W.N.W. of Faro. Pop. (19o0) 9687. Silves is surrounded by Moorish walls and dominated by a Moorish See also:castle. It has a See also:fine See also:Gothic See also:church. It has manufactures of corks and See also:soap; and exports See also:corn, vegetables and fruits. Large See also:numbers of pigs are bred, and fishing is carried on in the river and at See also:sea. See also:Alphonso III. (1210—1248) wrested Silves from the See also:Moors.
