STABLE , a See also:

building in which horses are kept, including the See also:stall in which they stand, furnished with manger and See also:rack, the See also:room in which the See also:harness is kept and attended to, the See also:loft in which the See also:hay and See also:corn are stored, and other See also:accessory rooms, &c. (See See also:HORSE.) This is the current usage, but the word was formerly applied, as was the Latin stabulum, i.e. See also:standing-See also:place (from stare, to stand), to a stall or enclosure for all kinds of domestic animals, cows, See also:sheep, &c. The See also:adjective " stable," meaning firmly established, comes directly from Latin stabilis, also from stare, to stand.
