SYMMACHUS , the name of a celebrated See also:

Roman See also:family of the 4th to 6th centuries of our era. It belonged to the gens See also:Aurelia and can be traced back to Aurelius Julianus Symmachus, proconsul of See also:Achaea (according to others, See also:vicar or See also:vice-See also:prefect of See also:Macedonia) in the See also:year 319. See also:Lucius Aurelius Avianius Symmachus, presumably his son, was prefect of See also:Rome in the year 364, and had also other important posts. He was celebrated for his virtues and the See also:senate awarded him in 377 a gilded statue.
