SYMEON METAPHRASTES ,1 the most renowned of the See also:Byzantine hagiographers. Scholars have been very much divided as to the See also:period in which he lived, See also:dates ranging from the 9th See also:century to the 14th having been suggested; but it is now generally agreed that he flourished in the second See also:half of the loth century. Still greater divergences of See also:opinion have existed as to the lives of See also:saints coming from his See also:pen, and here again the See also:solution of the problem has been attained by studying the See also:composition of the See also:great See also:Greek menologies. The menology of Metaphrastes is a collection of lives of saints for the twelve months of the See also:year, easily recognizable among analogous collections, and consisting of about 150 distinct pieces, some of which are taken bodily from older collections, while others have been subjected to a new recension (,ueret pavts). Among other See also:works attributed (though with some uncertainty) to Symeon are a See also:Chronicle, a canonical collection, some letters and poems, and other writings of less importance. Symeon's great popularity is due more particularly to his collection of lives of saints. About his See also:life we know only very few details. The Greeks See also:honour him as a See also:saint on the 28th of See also:November, and an See also:office has been composed in his honour. See L.
