Wild teasel is a See also:common plant of the See also:English copses and hedges, with a tall, stout, rigid, prickly See also:stem, bearing large spreading opposite leaves, the midrib of which is prickly, and conspicuous oblong heads, the purplish See also:flowers in which are subtended by very See also:long, narrow, stiff, upright bracts. The plant is known botanically as Dipsacus sylvestris. See also:Fuller's teasel, D. Fullonum, in which the bracts are hooked, is probably a cultivated See also:form of the wild See also:species; the dry heads are used to See also:comb up the See also:nap on See also:cloth. The genus Dipsacus gives its name to the See also:family Dipsaceae, to which also belongs the Scabious (Scabiosa), represented in See also:Britain by several species.
