THREAT , a menace or intimidation. At See also:common See also:law the employment of threats or other forms of intimidation to induce a See also:person to enter into a See also:contract will give the right to See also:sue for its recision or avoidance, or to plead the See also:special See also:form of intimidation in See also:answer to any See also:action brought, or to sue for See also:damages occasioned by entering into the contract. In criminal law the sending of threatening letters (or causing them to be received), demanding with menaces and without reasonable cause See also:money or other valuable thing, is a See also:felony. So is the sending a See also:letter threatening to See also:burn or destroy any See also:house, See also:barn or other See also:building or to kill or maim See also:cattle. It is also a felony to threaten to accuse a person of a See also:crime for the purpose of extorting money, or merely to demand money or other See also:property, without having any claim to it, by means of a threat.
