THREE BODIES, PROBLEM OF , the problem of determining the See also:

motion of three bodies moving under no See also:influence but that of their mutual See also:gravitation. No See also:general See also:solution of this problem is possible. As practically attacked it consists in the problem of determining the perturbations or disturbances in the motion of one of the bodies around the See also:principal or central See also:body, produced by the attraction of the third. Examples are the motion of the See also:moon around the See also:earth as disturbed by the See also:action of the See also:sun, and of one See also:planet around the sun as disturbed by the action of another planet.
