THUIN , a See also:

town of See also:Belgium, in that See also:part of the See also:province of See also:Hainaut called " entre Sambre et See also:Meuse." Pop. (1904), 6198. It is situated on the Sambre about 9 m. S.W. of See also:Charleroi. The old part of the town, which See also:dates back to the loth See also:century, occupies a narrow promontory between the Sambre and a small stream called the Biesmelle. The ruined See also:tower called after him is all that remains of the fortress constructed by See also:Bishop Notger of See also:Liege. It was successfully defended against the See also:Normans and See also:long afterwards against the See also:French under See also:Marshal de Lorges in 1654. Although the town itself retains something of its See also:medieval See also:appearance it is the centre of a See also:great manufacturing and See also:mining See also:district, the See also:banks of the Sambre being lined with factories and See also:coal-yards.
