TIBIA , a See also:

pipe played by means of a See also:reed See also:mouthpiece, extensively used in classic See also:Rome. The tibia, often mistranslated " See also:flute," was identical with the See also:aulos of the Greeks, and according as it was made with a cylindrical or with a conical See also:bore, it may be regarded as the prototype of our See also:clarinet or See also:oboe. The tibia was used at musical contests, in the See also:theatre, in the See also:arena, a at banquets, &c. A set of See also:ivory tibiae of cylindrical bore found at See also:Pompeii in a See also:good See also:state of preservation are in the museum at See also:Naples.
