TOAST , a slice of See also:

bread scorched See also:brown on the two surfaces by the See also:heat of a See also:fire. The word was borrowed from the O. Fr. toste, See also:Lat. torrere, tostum, to scorch, See also:burn. It was formerly the See also:custom to have pieces of toast floating in many kinds of liquor, especially when drunk hot. It is said to be from this custom that the word is used of the calling upon a See also:company to drink the See also:health of some See also:person, institution or cause (see HEALTH).
