There he served as county See also:judge, and attained the See also:rank (181o) of brigadier-general in the See also:state See also:militia. On the outbreak of the second war with See also:Great See also:Britain (1812) he was placed in command of the New York state frontier from See also:Oswego to See also:Lake St See also:Francis (near See also:Cornwall, See also:Ontario) and repelled the See also:British attacks on See also:Ogdensburg (See also:October 4, 1812) and Sackett's Harbor (May 29, 1813). In See also:July 1813 he was commissioned brigadier-general in the See also:regular army, andin See also:January 1814 he was promoted See also:major-general and succeeded General See also:James See also:Wilkinson in command of the forces at See also:Niagara. See also:Early in the summer of 1814 he undertook offensive operations, and his forces occupied Fort See also:Erie, and, on the 5th of July, at Chippawa, Ontario, defeated the British under General Phineas Riall (c. 1769-1851). On the 25th of July, with General See also:Winfield See also:Scott, he fought a hotly contested, but indecisive, See also:battle with the British under General See also:Gordon See also:Drummond (1771–1854) atLundy's See also:Lane, where he was twice wounded. After the war he remained in the army, of which he was the commanding general from See also:March 182,1 until his See also:death at See also:Washington, D.C., on the 24th of See also:February 1828.
