BROWN, See also:JOHN (1722-1787) , Scottish divine, was See also:born at Carpow, in See also:Perthshire. He was almost entirely self-educated, having acquired a knowledge of Latin, See also:Greek and See also:Hebrew while employed as a shepherd. His See also:early career was varied, and he was in See also:succession a packman, a soldier in the See also:Edinburgh See also:garrison in 1745, and a school-See also:master. He was, from 1750 till his See also:death, See also:minister of the Burgher See also:branch of the See also:Secession See also:church (see See also:UNITED PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH) in See also:Haddington. From 1786 he was See also:professor of divinity for his See also:denomination, and was mainly responsible for the training of its See also:ministry. He gained a just reputation for learning and piety. The best of his many See also:works are his Self-Interpreting See also:Bible and See also:Dictionary of the Bible, works that were See also:long very popular. The former was translated into Welsh. He also wrote an Explication of the See also:Westminster See also:Confession, and a number of See also:biographical and See also:historical sketches.
