TORRES VEDRAS , a See also:

town of See also:Portugal, in the See also:district of See also:Lisbon, 43 in. N. by W. of Lisbon, on the Lisbon-Figueira da Foz railway. Pop. (1900), 6900. Torres Vedras is built on the See also:left See also:bank of the See also:river Sizandro; it has a Moorish citadel and hot See also:sulphur See also:baths. See also:Roman See also:inscriptions and other remains have been found here, but the Latin name of the town, Turres Veteres, is probably See also:medieval. Here were the noted fortifications known as the " lines of Torres Vedras," constructed by See also:Wellington in 1810 (see See also:PENINSULAR See also:WAR). Here also in 1846 the troops of See also:General Saldanha defeated those of the See also:count de Bomfin and seized the See also:castle and town (see PORTUGAL: See also:History).
