TRIPOLITSA , officially Tripolis, a See also:

town of See also:Greece, See also:capital of the nomarchy of See also:Arcadia, and the seat of an See also:archbishop, situated in a See also:plain over 2,000 ft. above See also:sea-level, 22 M. S.W. of See also:Argos. The name has reference to the three See also:ancient cities of See also:Mantineia, Pallantium and See also:Tegea, of which Tripolitsa is the See also:modern representative. It does not stand on any ancient site. Before the See also:war of See also:independence it was the capital of the Morea and the seat of a See also:pasha, with about 20,000 inhabitants; but in 1821 it was taken and sacked by the insurgents, and in 1825 its ruin was completed by See also:Ibrahim Pasha. The town has since been rebuilt, and contains 10,789 inhabitants (1907).
