UTE, or See also:UTAH , a tribe of See also:North See also:American See also:Indians of Shoshonean stock. They originally ranged over central and western See also:Colorado and north-eastern Utah. They were divided into five sub-tribes, all acknowledging the authority of one See also:chief. They were a See also:wild warlike See also:people, constantly fighting the See also:Plain Indians and raiding as far See also:south as New See also:Mexico. Their relations with the whites have been generally friendly. The outbreak of the See also:White See also:River See also:Band in 1879 is almost the only exception. They are now on reservations in Utah and Colorado, and number over 2000.
