VALLOMBROSA , a summer resort of See also:

Tuscany, See also:Italy, in the See also:province of See also:Florence, reached by a See also:cable railway 5 M. See also:long from the station of_ S. Ellero (which is 16 m. S.E. of Florence) and 328 ft. above See also:sea-level, on the N.W. slope of the See also:Prato Magno See also:chain. The former monastery, suppressed in 1816, is occupied by the Royal School of Forestry. A number of hotels have been built. Similar summer resorts are situated among the See also:woods above the Casentino or upper valley of the See also:Arno to the See also:east, such as Camaldoli, Badia di Prataglia, &c. Camaldoli was the See also:original headquarters of the Camaldulensian See also:order, now partly occupied by an hotel. Five See also:hours' See also:journey to the S. of the last on See also:foot and 7z M. to the E. of Bibbiena by road is the monastery of La Verna, 366o ft. above sea-level, founded by St See also:Francis in 1215.
