VEROLI (anc. Verulae) , a See also:town and episcopal see of the See also:province of See also:Rome, See also:Italy, to m. by road N.E. of See also:Frosinone, 187o ft. above See also:sea-level. Pop. (19o1) 2622 (town);' 12,655 (See also:commune). The town is situated on a See also:hill in a strong position with a See also:fine view, on the site of the See also:ancient Hernican town of Verulae, 7 M. S.E. of See also:Aletrium. It retains remains of its ancient polygonal See also:enceinte, especially near the See also:summit of the hill, later occupied by a See also:medieval See also:castle. It is hardly mentioned in See also:history: we know that it became a See also:municipium in 90 B.C. The See also:cathedral See also:treasury contains the See also:breviary of S. See also:Louis of See also:Toulouse, and some interesting reliquaries, one in See also:ivory with bas-reliefs, and two in the See also:Gothic See also:style, of See also:silver gilt.
