VERVIERS , a See also:

town of See also:Belgium, in the See also:province of See also:Liege, not far from the Prussian frontier, and on the See also:main See also:line from Liege to See also:Aix-la-Chapelle and See also:Cologne. Pop, (1904) 49,168. It is a See also:modern town owing its prosperity to the See also:cloth See also:trade which began here in the 18th See also:century. It is situated on the Vesdre, which flows into the Ourthe a few See also:miles before its junction with the See also:Meuse; and the See also:water of that See also:river is supposed to be especially See also:good for See also:dyeing purposes. As the river water was insufficient to maintain the See also:local See also:industry an artificial See also:reservoir was constructed at La Gileppe on the Hautes Fagnes, and an imposing See also:aqueduct conveys the water stored on these See also:highlands into Verviers. There are also extensive See also:glass factories, but: these have suffered from See also:German competition, and many have been closed. A See also:monument to a local celebrity named Chapuis-is interesting for the See also:reason that his See also:execution by See also:order of the See also:prince-See also:bishop of Liege was the last See also:act of See also:sovereignty taken by that See also:prelate.
