town of See also:Germany, in the Prussian See also:province of See also:Westphalia, favourably situated among the See also:coal-See also:fields of the See also:Ruhr, 14 M. E. of See also:Essen and 15 M. N.E. of See also:Elberfeld by See also:rail. Pop. (1905) 35,841. It is an important seat of the See also:steel See also:industry. Other See also:industries are the making of See also:soap, chemicals and See also:beer. Witten was made a town in 1825. See Hassel, Wittener Ortskunde and Ortsgesetze (Witten, 1903).
