WOODCHUCK , the See also:

vernacular name of the See also:common See also:North See also:American representative of the marmots (see See also:MARMOT), scientific-ally known as Arctomys monax. The typical See also:race of this See also:species ranges from New See also:York to See also:Georgia and westward to the Dakotas, but it is represented by a second and darker race in Labrador, and by a third in See also:Canada; while several other North American species, have been named. The See also:ordinary woodchuck See also:measures about 18 in. in length, of which the tail forms a third. In See also:colour it is usually brownish See also:black above, with the See also:nose, See also:chin, cheeks and See also:throat tending to whitish, and the under parts brownish See also:chestnut; while the feet and tail are black and blackish. Like other marmots it is a burrower.
