ZENAGA (SANHAJA, SENAJER) , a See also:Berber tribe of See also:southern See also:Morocco who gave their name to See also:Senegal, once their tribal See also:home. They formed one of the tribes which, uniting under the leadership of Yusef See also:bin Tashfin, crossed the See also:Sahara and gave a See also:dynasty to Morocco and See also:Spain, namely, that of the See also:Almoravides (q.v.). The Zeirid dynasty which supplanted the See also:Fatimites in the Maghrib and founded the See also:city of See also:Algiers was also of Zenaga origin. The Zenaga See also:dialect of Berber is spoken in southern Morocco and on the See also:banks of the See also:lower Senegal, largely by the See also:negro See also:population.
