ABBAZIA , a popular summer and See also:

winter resort of See also:Austria, in See also:Istria, 56 m. S.E. of See also:Trieste by See also:rail. Pop. (1900) 2343. It is situated on the Gulf of Quarnero in a sheltered position at the See also:foot of the See also:Monte See also:Maggiore (4580 ft.), and is surrounded by beautiful See also:woods of See also:laurel. The See also:average temperature is 5o° Fahr. in winter, and 770 Fahr. in summer. The old See also:abbey, See also:San Giacomo della Priluca, from which the See also:place derives its name, has been converted into a See also:villa. Abbazia is frequented annually by about 16,000 visitors. The whole See also:sea-See also:coast to the See also:north and See also:south of Abbazia is rocky and picturesque, and contains several smaller winter-resorts. The largest of them is Lovrana (pop. 513), situated 5 M. to the south.
