ABENCERRAGES , a See also:family or See also:faction that is said to have held a prominent position in the Moorish See also:kingdom of See also:Granada in the 15th See also:century. The name appears to have been derived from the Yussuf See also:ben-Serragh, the See also:head of the tribe in the See also:time of Mahommed VII., who did that See also:sovereign See also:good service in his struggles to retain the See also:crown of which he was three times deprived. Nothing is known of the family with certainty; but the name is See also:familiar from the interesting See also:romance of Gines See also:Perez de See also:Hita, Guerras civiles de Granada, which celebrates the feuds of the Abencerrages and the See also:rival family of the Zegris, and the cruel treatment tAwhich the former were subjected.
