AGATHARCHIDES, or See also:AGATHARCHUS , of See also:Cnidus, See also:Greek historian and geographer, lived in the See also:time of See also:Ptolemy Philometor (181—146 B.C.) and his successors. Amongst other See also:works, he wrote See also:treatises on See also:Asia, See also:Europe and The Red See also:Sea. Interesting extracts from the last, of some length, are preserved in See also:Photius (See also:cod. 213), who praises the See also:style of the author, which waswriters know nothing of See also:canvas scenes; the background painted by Agatharchus was the wooden front of the See also:stage See also:building, and it was painted, not with reference to any particular See also:play, but as a permanent decorative background, representing no doubt a See also:palace or See also:temple. Agatharchus is said to have been seized by See also:Alcibiades and compelled by him to paint the interior of his See also:house, which shows that at the time (about 435 B.C.) decorative See also:painting of rooms was the See also:fashion.
