The See also:legend is that she was a native of Sicily (probably of Catania, though See also:Palermo also claims her), of See also:noble See also:birth and See also:great beauty. She repelled the advances of the See also:Roman See also:prefect sent by the See also:emperor See also:Decius to govern Sicily, and was by his orders brutally tortured and finally sent to the stake. As soon as the See also:fire was lighted, an See also:earthquake occurred, and the See also:people insisted on her See also:release. She died in See also:prison on the 5th of February 251. The See also:rescue of Catania from fire during an eruption of See also:Mount See also:Etna was later attributed to St Agatha's See also:veil.
