ALTENSTEIN , a See also:

castle upon a rocky See also:mountain in See also:Saxe-See also:Meiningen, on the See also:south-western slope of the Thuringerwald, not far from See also:Eisenach. It is the summer See also:residence of the See also:dukes of Meiningen, and is surrounded by a See also:noble See also:park, which contains, among other See also:objects of See also:interest, a remarkable under-ground cavern, 500 ft. See also:long, through which flows a large and rapid stream. See also:Boniface, the apostle of the Germans, lived and preached at Altenstein in 724; and near by is the See also:place where, in 1521, See also:Luther was seized, by the See also:order of the elector See also:Frederick the See also:Wise, to be carried off to the See also:Wartburg. An old See also:beech called " Luther's See also:tree," which tradition connected with the reformer, was blown down in 1841, and a small See also:monument now stands in its place.
