In 87 B.c. he was sent to See also:Greece with a large See also:army and See also:fleet, and occupied the See also:Peiraeus after three days' fighting with Bruttius Sura, See also:prefect of See also:Macedonia, who in the previous See also:year had defeated Mithradates' fleet under Metrophanes and captured the See also:island of Sciathus. Here he was besieged by See also:Sulla, compelled to with-draw into See also:Boeotia, and completely defeated at See also:Chaeroneia (86). A fresh army was sent by Mithradates, but Archelaus was again defeated at See also:Orchomenus, after a two days' See also:battle (85). On the conclusion of See also:peace, Archelaus, finding that he had incurred the suspicion of Mithradates, deserted to the See also:Romans, by whom he was well received.
