ARIANO DI PUGLIA , a See also:town and episcopal see, which, de-spite its name, now belongs to See also:Campania, See also:Italy, in the See also:province of See also:Avellino, 15oq ft. above See also:sea-level, on the railway between See also:Benevento and See also:Foggia, 24 M. E. of the former by See also:rail. Pop. (1901) town, 8384; See also:commune, 17,653. It lies in the centre of a fertile See also:district, but has no buildings of importance, as it has often been devastated by earthquakes. A considerable See also:part of the See also:population still dwells in caves. It has been supposed to occupy the site of Aequum Tuticum, an See also:ancient Samnite town, which became a See also:post-station on the Via Traiana' in See also:Roman times; but this should probably be sought at S. Eleuterio 51 M. See also:north. It was a military position of some importance in the See also:middle ages. Thirteen See also:miles See also:south-south-See also:east is the Sorgente Mefita, identical with the pools of See also:Ampsanctus (q.v.). (T.
