ARMAGEDDON , a name occurring in the Authorized Version of the See also:English See also:Bible in Rev. xvj. 16. The Revised Version has Harmagedon. The See also:form is commonly regarded as the See also:Greek See also:equivalent of the See also:Hebrew liar megiddon, the See also:mountain See also:district of Megiddo. The writer is describing the See also:place where the last decisive See also:battle was to be fought at the See also:Day of See also:Judgment, and Harmagedon may have been chosen as the name because the district about Megiddo had been on several occasions the See also:scene of See also:great battles (cf. Judg. iv. 6 if., v. 1g). It has, however, been suggested in the Zeitschrift See also:fur See also:die Alttestamentliche Wissenschaft, vii. 170 (1887), that the name is for liar migdo, " his fruitful mountain "—the mountain See also:land of See also:Israel. Prof. See also:Cheyne (Encyc. Bibl. s.v.) again, following suggestions of H. Gunkel, H. Zimmern and P. See also:Jensen, compares the See also:dragon of the See also:Apocalypse with the Babylonian Tiamat, thinks that some myth is referred to, and finds the uaye&wv of 'Apµayebwv in the divine name `YeueputyaSwv, a Babylonian See also:god of the underworld. The name of the place where Tiamat was defeated by See also:Marduk perhaps included that of a god of the underworld. (See See also:ANTICHRIST.) From the application of the word Armageddon to the great battle of the End of See also:Time comes the use of the phrase " an Armageddon " to See also:express any great slaughter or final conflict.
