AVESNES , a See also:

town of See also:northern See also:France, See also:capital of an See also:arrondissement in the See also:department of See also:Nord, on the Helpe, 28 m. S.E. of See also:Valenciennes by See also:rail. Pop. (1906) 5076. The town is the seat of a sub-See also:prefect, and has a tribunal of first instance, a chamber of See also:commerce and a communal See also:college. Its See also:church of St See also:Nicholas (16th See also:century) has a See also:tower 200 ft. high, with a See also:fine See also:chime of bells. The See also:chief See also:industry of the town is See also:wool-See also:spinning, and there is See also:trade in See also:wood. Avesnes was founded in the 11th century, and formed a countship which in the 15th century passed to the See also:house of See also:Burgundy and afterwards to that of See also:Habsburg. In 1477 it was destroyed by See also:Louis XI. By the treaty of the See also:Pyrenees (1659) it came into the See also:possession of the See also:French, and was fortified by See also:Vauban. It was captured by the Prussians in 1815.
