AVILES , or Set; See also:

NIcoLAs DE AvILEs (the See also:Roman Flavionavia), a seaport of See also:northern See also:Spain, in the See also:province of See also:Oviedo; on the See also:Bay of Aviles, a winding inlet of the Bay of See also:Biscay, 24 M. by See also:rail W. of Gij6n. Pop. (1goo) 12,763. Aviles is a picturesque and old-fashioned See also:town, containing several See also:ancient palaces and See also:Gothic churches. The bay, which is crossed by a See also:fine See also:bridge at its narrow landward extremity, is the headquarters of a fishing See also:fleet, and a See also:port of See also:call for many See also:coasting vessels. See also:Coal from the Oviedo mines is exported coastwise, and in 1904 the shipments from Aviles for the first See also:time exceeded those from Gijon, reaching a See also:total of more than 290,000 tons. See also:Glass and coarse See also:linen and woollen stuffs are manufactured; and there are valuable See also:stone quarries in the neighbourhood.
