BALTA , a See also:

town in the See also:Russian See also:government of See also:Podolia, between the See also:Dniester and the See also:Bug, 131 m. by See also:rail N.N.W. of See also:Odessa. It carries on a large See also:trade in See also:cattle, horses and See also:grain, and has two See also:annual fairs, held at Whitsuntide and in See also:June. A variety of See also:industries, such as See also:tallow-melting, See also:soap-boiling, See also:tile-making and See also:brewing, are carried on. The See also:Jews See also:form a very considerable See also:part of the See also:population, which in 1867 numbered 14,528, and in 1897, 23,393. Balta was in See also:great part destroyed by the Russians in 1780.
