THOMAS (1785-1841) , See also:British journalist, was See also:born about 1785. Educated at See also:Christ's See also:Hospital and See also:Pembroke See also:College, See also:Cambridge, he came to See also:London and soon joined the famous See also:literary circle of which See also:Hunt, See also:Lamb and See also:Hazlitt were prominent members. Upon the retirement of Dr Stoddart in 1817 he was appointed editor of The Times, a position which he held until his See also:death, when he was succeeded by See also:Delane. See also:Lord See also:Lyndhurst gave expression to a very widely-held See also:opinion when he described him as " the most powerful See also:man in the See also:country." He died on the 7th of May 1841.
