BENITOITE , a See also:

mineral discovered in 1907 near the See also:head-See also:waters of the See also:San Benito See also:river, San Benito Co., See also:California, and described by Prof. G. D. Louderback. It is a titano-silicate of See also:barium (BaTiSi3O9), crystallizing in the hexagonal See also:system, with a hardness of 6.5, and specific gravity 3.65. It may be colourless or See also:blue, the See also:colour varying sometimes in different parts, and passing to a deep See also:sapphire blue. The blue variety is cut as a See also:gem See also:stone, and often resembles blue See also:spinel, though its softness distinguishes it from spinel and sapphire. It is a brilliant stone, with high refractive See also:index, and is strongly dichroic, being See also:pale when viewed parallel to the See also:principal See also:axis and dark when viewed transversely.
